Matt Collins Guardian article on fundraising proclaimed, “A recent report found that entrepreneurs say social media is a waste of time, with no discernible impact on their sales, and I believe the same could be said for charities.” Matt’s conclusion is that resources should be allocated to avenues where the donations are generated. Has your ministry seen a good return on investment for the time and money you’ve spent soliciting funds through social media? Several years ago my colleague Tom Atema, who I know from his days at WMIT Radio in Asheville and EQUIP, gave me a copy of his book Leadership In Blue Jeans. I didn’t read it until recently … glad I did. My biggest takeaways included:

  • The mission is more important than who gets the credit.
  • “God uses money to create spiritual growth moments in our lives. Money is a catalyst so we can grow to another level in our faith” (p. 17).
  • It is more important to develop people for ministry rather than just doing ministry.
  • In non-profit ministry we can only control our expense. We cannot control income.
  • “People who are average in passion have less than average followers” (p. 45).
  • Be careful not to equate God’s blessings of success as something we achieved.
  • As leaders we will never take people to places where we ourself have never been.

There are many more pages and insights all marked up by the yellow highlighter. Tom’s book is like a powerful vitamin B shot that is sure to energize anyone serving and leading people in ministry. With the authors background in Christian radio, anyone in our field will find Leadership In Blue Jeans helpful in keeping our priorities straight.
